Chiltern's Spelling Framework
Spelling is taught systematically and discreetly throughout the school during their daily pelling session. In KS1 children use their phonics and as they progress they learn to apply the correct spelling choice as they learn to spell more complex words.
Spellings are taught at the beginning of the week from our spelling framework. Children are taught the meanings of words and how to unpick the word in order to spell them. They investigate spelling patterns, syllables, root words, suffixes and prefixes, synonyms and homophones and how to use mnemonics to aid spelling of more difficult or tricky words.
We use gamification to secure the words to memory, for example the use of spelling dice, pick a pair, writing and spelling the words using chalk encouraging the use of the look, cover, write, say and check method. This ensures children are given enough practice to learn to spell the words correctly and apply it to their independent writing.
Look at the children below using a range of spelling strategies to practise learning their spellings.
